Goals and Resolution: Checkin 1

  • Posted on January 16, 2012 at 10:00 am
This entry is part 2 of 6 in the series Goals and Resolutions 2012

No, you haven’t lost your mind. Our family is down to one computer, and I was hoping to have mine fixed by now. Unfortunately, laptops are not too fond of mac & beef, so repair has been agonizingly slow. And when I only have a few minutes in an uncomfy chair right before bedtime, expounding upon the subject at hand is easily delayed/dismissed. I’m backdating the entries for the days they *should* have been published. Thanks for joining my time-travel team <3

So how am I doing, two weeks after I set myself up?

Resolution: Get Healthy. Goals: Diet and exercise

I’m still fighting the urge to eat potato chips and cottage cheese for breakfast, but not all that often. These days I’m fighting the urge for crunchy food with a small handful of mixed nuts. And I’ve pinpointed “eating more veggies” as a designated target while my body adjusts.

I’m not working out every day, but I’m making a conscious effort to move more than I was. The scale has moved a bit, but it’s too early to tell if it was water weight.

Resolution: Budget. Goals: Develop side business, track spending

I’ve already totally blown the “keep track of money” part. I’ll try to pick it up again at the next payday.

My work on the side business has dealt mostly with focus. Am I going to design? host? code? troubleshoot? (Most likely? Troubleshoot.) How much do I charge?(believe it or not, that *has* been a problem in the past)

30 day challenge resolution: Uncluttering

Not going according to schedule. At all. After pondering on my “moderate failure” post from Friday, I had a realization.

I’m ready to let go of these things, but I’m not necessarily ready for what (if anything) is going to replace them. And to be completely honest, I’ll probably need some time and help processing that little tidbit.

And that’s all the news that’s fit to print right now about my resolutions.

Signs point to NO

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series I'm the man of the house.

This is the hole my drying rack was standing in. I was going to walk down to the creek and get a bucket of sand (instead of dirt) until I found

the hideout of SWEET JESUS!!!!! the Mousekiller. (Approximately 18-24″ long blacksnake)

Oooookay. So I’ll weedeat instead. Only…

This is my bladeless weedeater cartridge.

Not pictured: its stringless cartridge cousin.

I can’t find the replacement blades, and would need to purchase a replacement string cartridge. Oh well…guess I’ll mow. Only…

this is the empty gas can.

Since the entire POINT of today’s exercise was to avoid going to the store I can only come to one conclusion:

I’m *not* doing yardwork today.

The Exercise and The Agony: The Story

  • Posted on August 14, 2008 at 8:36 am

I had twittered that our departure time was delayed. A quick check of my tweets shows that I sat around for nearly two hours before being able to pack the van. Our Teen Travelling Companion went to a school sports practice with little sleep and no food – by the time we got to her house to get her things for the trip she had gone right past dizzy and nauseous and straight into Technicolor Yawning. (Humorous moment even within her pain: She tossed a bag of frozen peas on the table, said “Please Apply Directly To The Forehead” and then thunked her head down on it.)

Of course My Teen promptly sat down in front of their computer, leaving me with the exercise ball to sit on, and nothing else to do. What do you do when you’re sitting on a nice big bouncy ball?

You bounce, of course!

What do you do when you’re boooooooooored with bouncing?

You try something else. In my case, I decided to try stretching my back and shoulders out. It may have looked downright awful but that stretch felt soooooo goooood. To refresh your memory:

The exercise and the agony.

Her packing finally got done and we got underway. When we got to Mamaw’s house Thursday, my stomach felt a little odd but I chalked it up to spending $40 on fast food in one day and the boys having nothing to do but jump on me. Sleep was simply not going to come to me easily either – too much activity during the day.

Friday brought us a beautiful high-contrast day. We got the kids fed, the house cleaned up, and then went to the park for a few hours. What do we do at the park? We play, people! My favoritest thing in the world is to swing, so once the boys were occupied I made a beeline for the unoccupied set. My shoes flew off as I leaned back and pointed my toes in an ever-expanding effort to go higher. And then I realized this is The Perfect Time to try taking action shots. I wrapped my arms around the chain, turned the camera on, tightened my abs, and did my best to kick the sky.

Kicking the Clouds

Out of the ten shots I tried, this one is the best. The others are missed moments where I hit the button too soon or too late. I’ll let that sink in. Ten shots. While actively trying to keep my camera on. And for all practical purposes in a crunch.

The boys finally declared themselves Hot And Tired, so we hopped into the van for the trip back to Mamaw’s, where I collapsed on the sofa – and where Joe promptly jumped on me. You know what happens when a kid jumps on you, right? You curl protectively around the softest parts of your body into the fetal position. And you use your abs to get into that position. Thirty minutes or so after he FINALLY stopped bouncing on me, my abs decided to speak. Authoritatively.

Each individual muscle turned into a hot spasming bundle of pain, saying things like “We thought we’d remind you of that freshly postpartum feeling!” and “Oh HEY THERE did you know we exist??!!??”

My sweet sweet Mamaw didn’t understand what I was talking about – she kept asking me if I needed a Tums or something to eat or if I needed to go to the bathroom. And all I could do was sit there in the rocking chair holding my throbbing belly and gasp “Mamaw, I’ll be OK.” And then another muscle would spasm and take my breath away.

Finally, blessedly, the boys fell asleep and I was able to mincingly make my way to the bed and collapse.

One month left. Is it too late?

Let’s update on the 7 in 2007 list, shallwe?

1. Bring my GPA up to 3.0 or higher

I did bring my GPA up, but it will not break the 3.0 mark. Dropping out last spring with “the thorn in my side” didn’t help a whole lot.

2. Exercise more

Accomplished, if only because “exercise more” is so freaking vague. However, according to my lovely physician, I lost 30 pounds from 9/2006 to 9/2007.

3. Take instruction in tai chi

Newp. Didn’t happen. Registered for a class, then decided that sitting on the sofa with little boys piled on my lap was better for us all the way ’round. I’m out enough as it is with school and work.

4. Get out of the house and into some new/different social situations.

Most decidedly accomplished. I still have really seriously awkward moments – it takes me entirely too long to move on from an ended conversation. I’m most proud of my attendance at ConvergeSouth 2007. An entire weekend surrounded by strangers in unfamiliar environments and not a panic attack in sight.

5. Better blog posts

Once again – “better” is a vague description. Has my writing improved? Yes. Is there better writing in there? absolutely.

6. work up my yarn stash

heh. haha. *snort* hahahahahahahahahahahaha *thud*

No.

7. Travel more with the kids

We went to Mamaw’s Big Birthday Bash in July, and that was it. A lovely idea, but since I’m the only adult, travel is quite simply more than I can handle. All the driving, kid management in a new environment (difficult even before I drive for a few hundred miles), and then getting myself settled down? Thanks, I’ll just stay home and we’ll daytrip.

Don’t worry, I’m already working on my list for next year. It’s going to be a good list, too. Just like everyone else’s.

*heh*
