Garden Update: April 2011

  • Posted on May 3, 2011 at 8:00 am

This month’s experiment is:

A tipi for cucumber vines to grow up

my cucumber tipi. Bamboo tomato stakes strategically placed, tied up and wrapped with a scrap of cotton yarn. Hopefully the cotton yarn will be enough to let the vines do their thing. I placed the stakes so I have a window on each side to reach in and grab cukes if I need to.

The sugar snaps are up in the cardboard boxes, but…

as you can see, the cardboard was a good idea but execution needs a bit of work. I’m going to end up either transplanting them or (more likely) building a wooden box around the cardboard to hold it together til the end of the season.

Lettuce box #1 is up and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying picking my own salad – with the exception of the mustard greens. The problem with buying a packet of mesclun is that I wasn’t sure what I was planting – I just shook out half the packet in the box and waited for goodness to grow. While I like mustard greens in a salad, I don’t like THAT MUCH in one sitting. The other problem?

Crushed lettuces. The dog has been in here again.

Evidently the dog has a new bed.

And wrapping things up, we have complete failure.

Seeds planted in eggcrate

Every single “tips for getting kids to garden” includes using eggcrate for seed trays. I’m going to slice the crates up and stick the dirt in pots and hope SOMETHING comes up. The good news is I only planted 12 seeds in each crate (I was tempted to just sprinkle seeds and see what happens). I still have plenty more in the seed packets and am going to get those going as well. The crates are holding pickling cukes, two varieties of tomatoes, and stevia.

Signs point to NO

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series I'm the man of the house.

This is the hole my drying rack was standing in. I was going to walk down to the creek and get a bucket of sand (instead of dirt) until I found

the hideout of SWEET JESUS!!!!! the Mousekiller. (Approximately 18-24″ long blacksnake)

Oooookay. So I’ll weedeat instead. Only…

This is my bladeless weedeater cartridge.

Not pictured: its stringless cartridge cousin.

I can’t find the replacement blades, and would need to purchase a replacement string cartridge. Oh well…guess I’ll mow. Only…

this is the empty gas can.

Since the entire POINT of today’s exercise was to avoid going to the store I can only come to one conclusion:

I’m *not* doing yardwork today.
