I haven’t stayed awake like this in months.

The alarm chirped at 630 this morning. Out of bed I rolled, quietly walking past the bedroom full of sleeping snorting boys.

I made their lunches. Folded a load of laundry. Debated on whether or not to make a pot of coffee (I didn’t – Mama did when she woke up). Looked at the clock – time to get them out of bed.

I opened the door, leapt up on Dan’s bed and started singing

It’s the first day of school!

It’s the first day of school!

Get your booty out of beeeeed!

It’s the first day of school!

To the tune of Happy Birthday. I know, so creative and awesome. Worship my awesome creativity! (Why yes, I’m that obnoxious in the morning. If I’ve gotta get up, EVERYBODY has to.)

I whipped together a gourmet breakfast (in my head. In reality they were clamoring I WANT CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP and I WANT FRENCH TOAST STICKS and NOT THE FRENCH TOAST YOU MAKE MOMMY THE ONES IN THE FREEZER!) and lovingly slapped it down on the table in front of them.

Then we all got dressed and popped down the road to school. Where we immediately ran into The First Dayers.

Oh have mercy, I forgot about The First Dayers.

Cars. Parked everywhere. On the side road, in the driveway, in the MIDDLE of the driveway, at the end of the car-circle. Back it in, throw it in park, it’s not a spot but it’ll do! Hit that button to make the car go WOOP WOOP and stride purposefully into the school like you own it.

(But just for today. Tomorrow you’ll be back in your office and I’ll be able to park and walk my boys in like we always do.)

We pulled up to the front of the school building, got backpacks out of the back of the truck and well…

The good news is that they took off down the sidewalk and didn’t look back. The bad news is they quickly got swallowed up in the crowd of adults. I managed to get one clear shot of them on their first day – and their backs were to the camera.

~~~Dear Internet,
Please excuse the weirdness involved in the timestamp of this post. Emily was awake from 630 am til after midnight with no nap and hit “save” instead of  “publish”.
