Not much to talk about today, sorry.

  • Posted on October 30, 2006 at 1:20 pm

I’m hungry, but I don’t want what we have in the house.

I need to finish building the silver computer. It’s not an urgent need since the white one still works, but still. (Okay, so most of the holdup is that working on it while the boys are awake is nearly impossible.)

I want to do another cook-along, but I’m not quite sure what to make. Maybe pumpkin muffins?

Wonder how long I’ll be able to read uninterrupted this time… Think I’ll make it through a whole chapter?

Kernersville’s hospital request, denied.

  • Posted on October 28, 2006 at 3:09 pm

Full article.

I’m REALLY interested in the reasons for this, and very incredibly displeased that it was denied to begin with. The residents support it, the town’s government supports it, what were you THINKING Anonymous State Official??!!??

Tell me, State Official, have you ever had to look forward to a 30-45 minute drive with contractions 2 minutes apart? Or with a kidney stone? How about with a textbook kid + trampoline – permission = broken arm? Because I have. Each and every time we have a medical emergency, I go into it mentally calculating the time of day, traffic patterns, and possible detours if necessary.

What’s that? Call an ambulance for all those things? SURE! That’ll jack my time in transit up another 30-45 minutes minimum. (Incidentally, State Official – on the 30-45 minute drive with contractions 2 minutes apart? I delivered 20 minutes after arriving at the hospital. Had I waited on an ambulance, I would’ve given birth on the side of the highway.)

Novant, please PLEASE appeal this decision.

A low-energy day if ever there was one.

Panic attacks in the middle of the night make for “lazy” days the next day. It’s cold, wet and rainy, and all I want to do is curl up on the sofa with a good book. Fortunately, I’ve a gracious plenty of those around.

I am somewhat regretful that I took the boys to SciWorks yesterday – today would be a PERFECT day for indoor exploration. But we *did* have a great time (we usually do)!

And that’s essentially all the news that’s fit to print at the moment. I’m gonna go curl up with Social Problems and my constant WIP.

Welp, since it’s 340AM and my brain won’t let me sleep,

let’s talk about anxiety, shallwe? Generally speaking, when I tell people I have anxiety issues, I get a Very Serious WTF??!!?? look.

‘Lemme ‘splain:

I have a very incredibly active imagination. This is a beautiful thing: it helps me write stories; when I dream, they’re technicolor masterpieces. My fantasy life is rich with detail.

This is an awful thing: when I jerk awake at 3AM with a throbbing leg, the FIRST thing I think of is that a blood clot is screaming its way to my lungs, and I freak. In reality, I was sleeping in an odd position and pinched the nerve – my whole leg went numb.

I want to write more on this, but after the last two days I REALLY need to try to get some sleep.

Nerveshot & stressed – normal blogging to resume later.

Joe is going tomorrow to have Major Mouth Work done tomorrow. Since he’s 3, the decision has been made to knock his sassy lil butt out (less biting that way, of course) and build an entertainment center in there.

And I just got told that Mom is joining me tomorrow morning.

Laissez les bontemps roulez!!!!!!!

And another joins the WordPress cavalcade!

I had talked to Stephenomenal a while back about how much I love WordPress and the community surrounding it. I won’t take credit for his decision to use it, but I’ll quite happily dust off my pompoms and celebrate as only I can.

Reviewing – the Step2 Deluxe Canyon Road Train & Track Table

  • Posted on October 22, 2006 at 8:57 am

This thing was a “top 5 preschool toy for 2005″ on The Today Show, so I got the boys one for Christmas 2005. The Today Show kept hammering and hammering on how frequently the kids played with it in testing; that it was constantly played with. The *first* thing I’d like to point out is that “constantly played with” is a relative thing here. The product was placed in a daycare/testing situation. Okay. So? So, it wasn’t right there in front of the kids all day long. They went home, the train table stayed at the testing center.

While this is indeed an awesome piece of kids furniture, it has some cons that really need to be addressed in future editions of the table.

  • Decals. Okay, they’re great for the scenery. The roads/train tracks, however, are a totally different matter. Say you have a curious 3 yr old that finds a corner or bubble and picks at it, tearing the decal. Say you ALSO have a 5 yr old that likes to drive SUPERRRRRRR FAST!!!! on the roads. Now, let’s have the super-fast 5 yr old hit that tear in the decal with his car – further tearing the decal (it’s now completely ripped in half, and curling up, fouling the vehicle wheels with stickiness).
  • The bridges. The joints between the road and bridges are a mess, and whoever thought of “tacking” the bridges down with those fasteners should be straitjacketed and left in my livingroom to watch my son YANK the bridge up off the table and then get upset because those @&3%#() fasteners won’t let him put the bridge back the way he wants it done.
  • The lid. Nothing more than a piece of particle board with a “whiteboard” covering on one side, cut to “sink” into the tabletop, and a fingerhole in the middle to facilitate lifting. It has held up reasonably well to being climbed/jumped/stomped on. They didn’t carry the idea far enough in my little world. If you can put a whiteboard coat on one side, why not put a coat of magnetic chalkboard paint on the other?
  • They don’t specify that the SMALLER “Thomas”-type trains fit. (Okay, so that’s more of an annoyance. Still…)

Okay, Em – so what did they get RIGHT on this thing?

  • It’s the perfect height for the boys to play with.
  • They love it so much they fight over it (Okay, so maybe that should be in the “cons” list LOL).
  • If you avoid using or otherwise remove the fasteners from the bridges, there’s a GREAT engineering lesson in there. (If a train is moving superfast, and a curved bridge is where a straight bridge should be, what will happen?)
  • This table is STURDY. I came out of the kitchen one day to see both boys standing AND JUMPING on the table. While this obviously isn’t recommended by the company, it’s important to note that this table isn’t likely to collapse under “off label” use/abuse. Do not try this at home. Your Mileage may vary. Batteries not included. Heh.

Despite the cons, I’m glad this table made its way into our home.

Addendum, Nov 21, 2006: The Decals have left the building. I repeat – the decals have left the building. The ripped/curled decal I mentioned earlier? Yeah, Daniel tried to “fix” it. I’ll spare you the window-shattering shriek that came along shortly after. It took a few minutes, but ALL the decals have now been pulled off (even the “scenery” ones). The table isn’t quite as pretty, but we can live with that.

The bridges also have that “stressed plastic” white crease along the tab/fastener part from being repeatedly yanked and replaced. The “one way” fasteners are long gone – I had to take them off to keep the bridges from being broken. This makes for a MUCH less sturdy driving track.

Addendum II, January 19, 2007: Step2 now has my undying adoration. They replaced the decals, bridges AND fasteners at no charge.

**Disclaimer: I am not in any way/shape/form being recompensed by Step2 for my review of this oh-so-awesome table.

The WordPress-to-WordPress migration is complete

  • Posted on October 21, 2006 at 5:14 pm

As I went to sleep last night, I realized two things: I was probably making things more complicated than they needed to be, and that I hadn’t done the two things that Every Good Webgeek should do – google and check the WordPress Support Forums. When I woke up this morning, I did search the support forums, but all I could find was a plugin for WP 1.5.X (with corrections in the comments for making it work for WP 2.X) I read through the posts, got called away to go grocery shopping, and decided that I didn’t want to sledgehammer something into working.

The entire point of USING WordPress is that it’s simple, elegant, and EASY to use, after all.

No, this wouldn’t do at all. So, what’s an enterprising AND incredibly motivated chick to do? Google it, of course. And that’s where I found The WordPress-to-WordPress Import Plugin by Aaron Brazell. I’ll let you read the post itself for credits, origins, and how-tos, but it really couldn’t be simpler. The only issue I had is that the XML file it output was too big to import all at once – I had to split it and run the importer twice (once for the giganto XML file to process, and then again to catch the stuff that I’d split off).

And now, since I can rest easy knowing my blogchives are all in one place again, I’m going to feed those monsters rugrats the fruit of my loins the boys.

The to-do list for my weekend, with commentary

  • Posted on October 20, 2006 at 5:30 pm

Because if I don’t write it down, I’ll forget something!!!!!

  1. Do a complete all-sites backup (webspace AND databases)
  2. Restore the tinklebelle.com database and turn Akismet loose on the comments. 6118 spams murdered.
  3. Decide if I want to go through the archives and re-categorize/technorati tag the posts
  4. Port the tinklebelle.com db over to mamasbloggin so it’ll all be in one place.
  5. Split the bloggin’ database off the mamaspassion database, and reorg site files accordingly
  6. Back the site up AGAIN, reflecting the changes
  7. install technorati tag/cloud plugin
  8. Finish the silver computer.
  9. Laundry. Anyone wanna volunteer for folding/putting away?
  10. Homework – in all three classes. Not gonna itemize, but I’ve been a Bad Bad Student today.

Ye gawds.

Things to think about before I get back to work:

  • Posted on October 20, 2006 at 10:34 am

I don’t need a laundry room, I need a laundromat. And someone to fold too, ifyouplease!!!!

I’m not so sure concealing my location so assiduously was a good idea. At the Blogsboro Meetup I got to meet a good heaping handful of people who were blog-savvy. After a few days of mulling the meeting over, I’ve come to a conclusion or two. Someone had told me the group is “cliqueish” – I did not find that to be the case at all. Yes, the conversation DID center around “Greensboro Issues” BUT!!! – I do believe I was the only non-GSO resident in attendance. In other words – those Triad Bloggers who would complain about that need to Show Up Or Shut Up. Or better yet, hit my “contact me” button and let me know you’re interested so we can work on getting a Winston or Kernersville meetup.

Several thoughts occurred while I sat there

  1. I need to re-think the way I run the back-end of this website.
  2. I have GOT to get my archives back up.
  3. My “hard limit” (learning php & mysql) is Really Truly going to stand

It’s been too long since I put a computer together. I’m sittin here, reading the book to make sure I don’t forget to hook something up. *heh*

And y’know, I could sit here all day long, blogging my to-do list, or I could get my ass up and actually get it done. (But? I’d rather be blogging.)
